Used to determine the resistance to shearing of all types of soil specimens both consolidated and drained, undisturbed or remoulded samples. The machine can accommodate specimens dia. 60, 100 mm, and square 60x60, 100x100 mm. The apparatus is equipped with a control closed loop motor with epicycloid reducers. The Direct Shear test apparatus consist of a square or circular box divided into two halves. The specimen, contained in the box, is subjected to a constant normal load while an increasing horizontal force is applied to one of the sections of the shear box. This force causes a shear failure along the juncture between the box sections of this. The shear force and the normal load are measured directly. The rate of strain is adjusted by the speed of the horizontal force applied. The loading unit has V-strips on which the shear box housing rests. The load yoke in these direct shear test apparatus helps counter balance the loading system. The lead screw connected to the shear box housing helps application of shear stress.

The settlement of foundations and changes in earth pressure due to movement of retaining walls or other earth supports, the yield of soil caused by application of load, are affected by the stress-strain relationship of soils.
